Day 2:

Moshi to Machame Camp (Approx. 11 km / 5–7 hours trek)

Day Overview

After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up from the lodge around 8:00 AM for a 1-hour drive (18 km) to Machame Gate (1,800m). Here, you’ll register with the park authorities and meet your porter team.

Begin your trek through the lush montane rainforest, where monkeys swing overhead and the air is cool and fresh. The trail gradually ascends for about 11 km, taking around 5–7 hours to reach Machame Camp (3,000m).

Highlights:

  • Breathtaking forest scenery

  • Possible sightings of blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys

  • Steady elevation gain ideal for acclimatization

Recommendation: Move slowly (“pole pole” as locals say) and drink at least 3 liters of water today to start acclimatizing.

Day 3:

Machame Camp to Shira Camp (Approx. 5 km / 4–6 hours trek)

Day Overview

After an early breakfast, continue climbing on a steeper trail that soon leaves the forest and enters the moorland zone. Vegetation changes to tall grasses, heathers, and unique plants like giant lobelias.

The hike covers around 5 km in 4–6 hours, reaching Shira Camp (3,840m) on a plateau with incredible views of Mount Meru in the distance. You’ll arrive by early afternoon and have time to rest or explore nearby viewpoints before dinner.

Highlights:

  • Stunning views of Kibo Peak

  • Transition from rainforest to moorland

  • Evening clouds rolling over the Shira Plateau

Accommodation: Shira Camp (Tented)

Day 4:

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp (Approx. 10 km / 6–8 hours trek)

Day Overview

Today is a key acclimatization day. After breakfast, trek eastward across the Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower (4,630m). The climb takes about 5 hours and is an excellent test of your body’s adjustment to altitude.

After lunch at Lava Tower, descend slowly for 2–3 hours into the Barranco Valley (3,960m) — a spectacular area filled with giant senecio trees. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adapt well to the elevation.

Highlights:

  • High-altitude trekking experience

  • Views of the Western Breach and Lava Tower

  • Sunset over the Barranco Wall

Accommodation: Barranco Camp (Tented)

Recommendation: Even if you lose appetite at higher altitude, try to eat well and keep hydrating.

Day 5:

Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp (Approx. 9 km / 7–8 hours trek)

Day Overview

Start your morning with an exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent offering some of the most beautiful views on the mountain. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the top.

Continue to Karanga Valley Camp (3,995m) for a short rest and hot lunch. Afterwards, ascend further to Barafu Camp (4,673m), the base camp for your summit attempt. The total trekking time today is around 7–8 hours over 9 km.

At Barafu, have an early dinner and rest as your summit climb begins around midnight.

Highlights:

  • Challenging but rewarding Barranco Wall climb

  • Amazing views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks

  • Preparation for summit night

Accommodation: Barafu Camp (Tented)

Recommendation: Try to sleep early. Set out all your summit gear before resting.

Day 6:

Summit Day – Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp (Approx. 17 km / 10–14 hours trek)

Day Overview

This is the big day! You’ll wake up around 11:30 PM for a light meal and begin your final ascent by midnight. Using your headlamp, climb slowly on switchbacks through scree and icy slopes toward Stella Point (5,739m).

From Stella Point, it’s about another 45-minute gentle walk to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. Arrive at sunrise and celebrate with photos and breathtaking views over the glaciers and plains below.

After your summit success, descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) through alpine desert and moorland.

Highlights:

  • Reaching the “Roof of Africa”

  • Majestic sunrise at Uhuru Peak

  • Life-changing accomplishment

Accommodation: Mweka Camp (Tented)

Recommendation: Use trekking poles on descent to reduce knee strain.

Day 7:

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi (Approx. 10 km / 3–4 hours trek + 1-hour drive)

Day Overview

Enjoy your last breakfast on the mountain before descending through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate (1,640m). The trek takes around 3–4 hours.

At the gate, you’ll receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate — a proud souvenir of your successful climb. After saying farewell to your mountain crew, your driver will transfer you back to Weru Weru River Lodge (45 km, about 1 hour) in Moshi for a hot shower, a celebratory dinner, and a well-earned rest.
