About This Trip

Africa's most personal wildlife encounter — then four days of doing nothing on a beach.

Gombe Stream National Park is the smallest national park in Tanzania — 35 square kilometers of forest on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is also where Jane Goodall began the chimpanzee research that changed how humans understand our closest relatives. The chimps here are habituated to human presence, which means you can sit ten meters from a family group and watch them eat, groom, and play.
This is not a safari in the conventional sense. There are no game-viewing vehicles, no Big Five checklist, no other tourists in the next jeep. You trek on foot through forest paths with trackers who know each chimp by name and family history. The encounter lasts an hour by park rule — and that hour is one of the most quietly intense experiences in African travel.
We pair Gombe with Zanzibar deliberately. The flight logistics work: Kigoma to Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar can be done in one day. The emotional logistics work better: an intense, focused wildlife experience followed by four days of slow recovery on a beach is the right shape for this kind of trip. Most clients return saying the chimps were the highlight — and the beach is what made the highlight feel complete.

"You can do a Northern Circuit safari again. You can climb Kilimanjaro a second time. Tracking chimpanzees at Gombe is the kind of experience most travelers do exactly once."

The 8-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival in Tanzania · Flight to Kigoma · Boat to Gombe

Arrival at your start airport (Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro), then a domestic flight to Kigoma on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The transfer is a journey in itself — most travelers have never been to this part of Tanzania, and Kigoma’s air feels different from Arusha or Dar.

A short visit to Dr. Livingstone’s Memorial in Ujiji, where Henry Stanley famously met David Livingstone in 1871 with the line “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” Then a private boat ride across the lake to Gombe National Park — Africa’s smallest and most specialized chimpanzee reserve.

Accommodation

Kasekela Bandas (basic park accommodation) or Mbali Mbali Gombe Lodge (upgrade)

Today's highlight

First view of Lake Tanganyika — the world's longest and second-deepest freshwater lake

Early breakfast, then into the forest with experienced trackers who know the chimps by name and family. The Kasekela community is the one made famous by Jane Goodall’s 50-year research — these chimps have generations of habituation to careful human observation.

Trek time varies depending on where the chimps have moved overnight. Some days you find them within an hour; other days the forest takes its time. By park rule, you have exactly one hour with the chimps once you find them — sitting on the forest floor while they eat, groom each other, and occasionally pass within touching distance. You are not allowed to touch, photograph with flash, or make sudden movements. The intensity of those 60 minutes is hard to describe to someone who has not experienced it.

Return to camp for lunch, then optional afternoon swimming in Lake Tanganyika — the water is clear, warm, and bilharzia-free in this section of the lake.

Sitting ten meters from a chimpanzee mother grooming her infant

Wake before sunrise for an optional second chimpanzee trek — recommended if you found the chimps quickly yesterday and want a different family group. Some travelers also visit the Kakombe Waterfall, a hidden gem deep in the forest surrounded by dense greenery and the constant background of forest sounds.

After lunch, boat transfer back to Kigoma town for an overnight at a lakeside hotel. Sunset over Lake Tanganyika from the hotel — the water turns gold and the Congolese coast on the far side becomes faintly visible.

The transition from forest to comfortable hotel — and the first proper shower in days

After breakfast, transfer to Kigoma airport for the flight to Zanzibar (via Dar es Salaam). On arrival in Zanzibar, our representative meets you and drives you to Stone Town — the UNESCO World Heritage Site at the heart of the island.

Afternoon walking tour of Stone Town: the giant carved wooden doors, the spice markets, the old slave market memorial, and the labyrinth of alleys where you cannot navigate by map. The smell of cardamom, cloves, and saltwater is everywhere. End the day at your beach hotel as the Indian Ocean breeze takes over.

Today's highlight

Walking the carved-door alleys of Stone Town as the sunset call to prayer begins

The first proper rest day. Sleep in. Long breakfast. The pace from here is entirely yours.

Optional activities your hotel can arrange: snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll (the best snorkeling on Zanzibar, dolphins frequently spotted), a sailing excursion on a traditional dhow, a sunset cruise with included drinks, or a half-day spice farm tour. None are mandatory. Many travelers simply read, swim, and sleep.

Today's highlight

Doing nothing, on purpose, with the sound of waves

For travelers who want one cultural day mid-stay, this is when most book either the spice farm tour (half-day, learn about Zanzibar’s clove and cardamom industries) or a morning at Jozani Forest to see the endemic red colobus monkeys — a primate sighting that bookends the chimpanzee experience from earlier in the trip.

For those who prefer the beach to remain the beach, the same applies as yesterday: swim, read, eat seafood, sleep early.

Today's highlight

Whatever rhythm has emerged by day three of doing nothing

The last full day on the island. Most travelers book a sunset dhow cruise — a traditional wooden sailing boat with included drinks and snacks, departing from Stone Town or Nungwi as the sun touches the horizon. The cruise lasts about two hours and ends in time for dinner at the hotel.

Pack tonight. Tomorrow is the travel day home.
