About This Trip
Why we recommend the 8-day Machame over the 7-day
The 7-day Machame is the most popular Kilimanjaro itinerary in the world. The 8-day version is the same route, with one extra acclimatization day at altitude. That single extra day raises summit success from roughly 85% to 92% — meaningful when you've travelled across the world for this climb.
You'll trek through five distinct climate zones — montane rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and finally the summit's arctic zone. The Machame follows "climb high, sleep low" principles that genuinely help your body adjust. We have found this is the difference between summiting in exhaustion and summiting strong enough to remember it.
This itinerary uses certified mountain guides with 10+ years on the Machame route, two porter-supported mess tents for proper hot meals, emergency oxygen on every group, and porter welfare throughout. Pre-climb gear check in Moshi the day before you start — small detail, real difference.
"The extra day costs about $200 and adds a meaningful margin of safety, comfort, and summit success. It is the single best investment you can make in your climb."

The 8-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival in Tanzania · Pre-climb briefing in Moshi
- Altitude: 890m
- Driving: ~1 hour from JRO
- Overnight: Moshi hotel
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Our driver meets you in the arrivals hall and transfers you to your Moshi hotel — about an hour’s drive. The first sight of the mountain often comes through the car window, far larger than expected.
Afternoon pre-climb briefing with your lead guide. We check every piece of your gear, rent or replace anything inadequate, walk through the itinerary day by day, and answer any questions you have. Early dinner and rest. Tomorrow is the start.

Day 2 — Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (3,000m) · Into the rainforest
- Walking: 5–7 hrs
- Distance: 11 km
- Elevation gain: +1,200m
After breakfast, an hour’s drive to Machame Gate (1,800m) for registration with the National Park. The first day climbs through dense montane rainforest — vines, hanging mosses, the occasional Colobus monkey high in the canopy. Expect afternoon rain — it is the rainforest. Boots and a proper rain shell are non-negotiable.
You reach Machame Camp (3,000m) by late afternoon. Hot meal, evening briefing from your guide, and an early sleep. Sleep at altitude is the acclimatization weapon nobody talks about.

Day 3 — Machame Camp (3,000m) → Shira Camp (3,840m) · Above the treeline
- Walking: 4–6 hrs
- Distance: 5 km
- Elevation gain: +840m
Out of the rainforest into the heath and moorland zone. The trees give way to giant heather and the strange, prehistoric-looking Senecio plants. The views begin to open up — Mt. Meru to the west, the plains of Tanzania below.
Shorter distance today, more vertical gain. Take it slowly — pole pole, as the guides say. Arrive at Shira Camp by mid-afternoon for the first clear view of Kibo, the summit cone ahead. Camp on the Shira Plateau, an ancient collapsed crater.

Day 4 — Shira Camp → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,950m) · The acclimatization day
- Walking: 6–8 hrs
- Distance: 10 km
- Max altitude reached: 4,630m
The day that makes the 8-day Machame work. You ascend to Lava Tower at 4,630m for lunch — a striking volcanic plug — then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950m. This “climb high, sleep low” pattern forces your body to start producing the red blood cells you’ll need at summit altitude.
Expect a headache and reduced appetite at Lava Tower. Both are normal at this altitude. Your guides will check oxygen saturation with a pulse oximeter and decide if you continue or rest. Most climbers feel noticeably better once you descend to Barranco.

Day 5 — Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (4,035m) · The Barranco Wall
- Walking: 4–5 hrs
- Distance: 5 km
- Elevation gain: +85m (net)
Short day in distance, but it includes the legendary Barranco Wall — a scramble up a near-vertical rock face. It looks more frightening than it is. Use your hands, follow your guide’s line, take the porters’ pace. The view from the top is worth every step.
Then a relatively gentle traverse to Karanga Camp at 4,035m. Karanga is the extra night that 8-day climbers get and 7-day climbers do not. You’ll arrive in time for lunch and have the entire afternoon to rest before tomorrow’s high camp move.

Day 6 — Karanga Camp → Barafu High Camp (4,673m) · Preparing for the summit
- Walking: 4 hrs
- Distance: 4 km
- Elevation gain: +638m
Final approach to high camp. The walk is short but the altitude is real now. The landscape has become alpine desert — bare volcanic scree, sparse vegetation, the cold beginning to bite even in the sun.
Arrive Barafu by early afternoon. Early dinner, full gear check for the summit attempt, layered clothing laid out, headlamp tested. You will sleep by 7pm and wake at 11:30pm. Do not expect to sleep well — at this altitude, very few do.

Day 7 — SUMMIT DAY · Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → descent to Mweka Camp (3,068m)
- Walking: 12–14 hrs
- Distance: ~17 km
- Max altitude: 5,895m
The day you came for. Wake at 11:30pm. Hot tea and biscuits at midnight. Begin the climb to Stella Point in the dark and cold — six to seven hours of switchbacks up steep volcanic scree. This is the hardest part of the climb, physically and mentally. Trust your guide, drink water, keep moving.
From Stella Point (5,756m), another 45 minutes along the crater rim brings you to Uhuru Peak — 5,895m, the highest point on the African continent. Sunrise from the summit is the photograph you’ll never forget. Then a long descent — first to Barafu for breakfast and a short rest, then continuing down to Mweka Camp at 3,068m. Every step downhill is a step into warmer, easier air.

Day 8 — Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate (1,640m) → Moshi · Certificates and farewells
- Walking: 3–4 hrs
- Distance: 10 km
- Then 1-hour drive to Moshi
Final descent through montane forest to Mweka Gate. The air thickens with every step. By the time you reach the gate, your appetite, your breathing, and your sense of humour have all returned.
Summit certificate ceremony — gold for Uhuru Peak summiteers, green for Stella Point. Transfer back to Moshi for the hot shower you have been imagining for days, and a celebratory dinner. Onward to Kilimanjaro Airport or a well-earned extra night in Moshi to recover.
