About This Trip
Climb the mountain. Recover on the plains.
Most Kilimanjaro climbers fly home the day after summit. By the time they reach their own bed, the experience already feels distant — too much travel too soon, no time to process what just happened.
This 11-day trip solves that. You climb Kilimanjaro by the Lemosho route — the quietest and most scenic approach to the summit — and then you decompress for three days on a Northern Circuit safari. Elephant herds in Tarangire, then black rhino and lion prides in the Ngorongoro Crater. By the time you fly home, you have done the two things Tanzania is most famous for, in the right order.
We pair the climb specifically with Lemosho rather than Machame or Marangu for one reason: Lemosho has the best acclimatization profile of the three popular routes, which means you arrive at the safari section with more energy. The 4-star lodge nights between climb and safari give your legs and lungs time to recover before the long days of game driving begin.
"Climbers who do this trip almost always say the same thing: the safari at the end is what made the climb feel finished."

The 11-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival in Tanzania · Pre-climb briefing in Arusha
- Altitude: 1,400m
- Driving: ~1 hour from JRO
- Overnight: Arusha hotel
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Our driver meets you in the arrivals hall and transfers you to your Arusha hotel — about an hour’s drive. Arusha is at 1,400m, which begins your acclimatization before the climb itself.
Afternoon pre-climb briefing with your lead guide. We check every piece of your gear, rent or replace anything inadequate, and walk through the climbing itinerary day by day. Early dinner and rest.

Day 2 — Lemosho Gate (2,100m) → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m) · Into the rainforest
- Walking: 3 hrs

The remote western approach with almost no other climbers
Day 3 — Mandara Huts (2,720m) → Horombo Huts (3,780m) · Above the treeline
- Walking: 5–7 hrs
- Distance: 8 km
- Elevation gain: +750m
The trail steepens out of the rainforest into the heath and moorland zone. You cross streams and ridges as the views begin to open in every direction. Take it slowly — pole pole — as the altitude starts to make itself felt.
Arrive at Shira 1 Camp by late afternoon, set on the western edge of the Shira Plateau with stunning views of Kibo summit ahead. Camp under stars that look impossibly close at altitude.

Day 4 — Shira 1 (3,500m) → Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) · Crossing the plateau
- Walking: 4 hrs
- Distance: 7 km
- Elevation gain: +350m
A gentler day across the Shira Plateau — the ancient collapsed crater that gives this route its character. The shorter distance is deliberate, designed for acclimatization rather than pushing forward. Take advantage of it.
Arrive at Shira 2 Camp by lunch, with the entire afternoon free to acclimatize, drink water, and explore the surrounding area. Some climbers walk a short distance higher for a “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization hike.

Day 5 — Shira 2 (3,850m) → Lava Tower (4,600m) → Barranco Camp (3,940m) · The acclimatization day
- Walking: 6 hrs
- Distance: 10 km
- Max altitude reached: 4,600m
The day that makes the 8-day Lemosho work. You ascend to Lava Tower at 4,600m for lunch — a striking volcanic plug — then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,940m. This “climb high, sleep low” pattern forces your body to start producing the red blood cells you’ll need at summit altitude.
Expect a headache and reduced appetite at Lava Tower. Both are normal. Your guides will check oxygen saturation with a pulse oximeter. Most climbers feel noticeably better once you descend to Barranco, where the camp sits dramatically below the Western Breach cliffs.

Day 6 — Barranco Camp → Karanga Valley → Barafu High Camp (4,600m) · The Barranco Wall
- Walking: 6 hrs (including Karanga rest stop)
- Elevation gain: +660m
Begin with the legendary Barranco Wall — a scramble up a near-vertical rock face. It looks more frightening than it is. Use your hands, follow your guide’s line. The view from the top is worth every step.
Continue across the Karanga Valley for lunch, then a final push to Barafu Camp at 4,600m. Arrive by mid-afternoon. Early dinner, full gear check for the summit attempt, layered clothing laid out, headlamp tested. You will sleep by 7pm and wake at 11:30pm. Do not expect to sleep well.

Day 7 — SUMMIT DAY · Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
- Walking: 10–12 hrs
- Distance: ~17 km
- Max altitude: 5,895m
The day you came for. Wake at 11:30pm. Hot tea and biscuits at midnight. Begin the climb to Stella Point in the dark and cold — six to seven hours of switchbacks up steep volcanic scree. This is the hardest part of the climb, physically and mentally. Trust your guide, drink water, keep moving.
From Stella Point (5,756m), another 45 minutes along the crater rim brings you to Uhuru Peak — 5,895m, the highest point on the African continent. Photographs at the famous sign. Then a long descent — first to Barafu for breakfast and a short rest, then continuing down to Mweka Camp at 3,100m. Long day. Every step downhill is a step into warmer, easier air.

Day 8 — Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Arusha · Descent, certificate, recovery
- Walking: 3–4 hrs
- Then ~3-hour drive to Arusha
Final descent through montane forest to Mweka Gate. The air thickens with every step. Summit certificate ceremony at the gate — gold for Uhuru Peak summiteers, green for Stella Point.
Transfer back to Arusha for a hot shower and the first proper meal off the mountain. This is the recovery night before the safari begins — a swimming pool, comfortable bed, time to process what you just did. Most climbers sleep deeply for ten hours.

Day 9 — Arusha → Tarangire National Park · Safari begins
- Driving: ~2.5 hours
- Game drives: afternoon
After a relaxed breakfast, your safari guide and 4×4 vehicle collect you from the hotel. The 2.5-hour drive to Tarangire National Park takes you through the Masai Steppe, with views of the Maasai homelands and the occasional roadside cattle market.
Tarangire is famous for two things: the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania (often 100+ animals visible at the Tarangire River), and the ancient baobab trees that give the park its character. Afternoon game drive into the park, then back out to the lodge for sundowners. The transition from mountain to plains is complete.
Meals
Breakfast at lodge
Accommodation
Eileens Trees Inn or similar (lodge near park boundary)
Today's highlight
First sight of an elephant herd — usually within an hour of entering the park
Day 10 — Ngorongoro Crater · Full-day game drive
- Driving: ~2 hours to crater
- Full day in the crater
Early breakfast and an early start to maximize time in the crater. The descent into Ngorongoro is dramatic — 600 meters of switchbacks down the crater wall into what is essentially a self-contained ecosystem. Inside the 260 square kilometer crater floor live roughly 25,000 large animals, including approximately 50 critically endangered black rhinos.
This is the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa. In a single day you typically see lions (resident prides), elephants, buffalo, hippos in the central lake, flamingos, and — if you’re lucky — black rhino. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool. Ascend the crater wall in late afternoon for your final lodge night.
