About This Trip
The most comfortable route — with an extra day for better acclimatization
Marangu is the oldest established route up Kilimanjaro and the only one where you sleep in mountain huts rather than tents. For climbers who don't want to camp at altitude, that single difference matters. The huts are basic — wooden bunks, shared dining halls, simple but real shelter from the cold.
The standard 5-day and 6-day Marangu has a low summit success rate because the route ascends and descends along the same path, with limited "climb high, sleep low" opportunities. Our 8-day version adds an acclimatization day at Horombo Huts (3,780m) — and that single extra day at altitude pushes summit success from the industry-typical 65% to closer to 78%.
This itinerary uses certified mountain guides with 10+ years on the Marangu route, hot meals served in the hut dining halls, emergency oxygen on every climb, and porter welfare standards. Pre-climb gear check in Moshi the day before you start.
"If you've decided you want huts instead of tents, do the 8-day version. The extra acclimatization day is the difference between summiting and turning back."

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Our driver meets you in the arrivals hall and transfers you to your Moshi hotel — about an hour’s drive. On clear days, Kilimanjaro fills the view through the windscreen.

Day 2 — Marangu Gate (1,960m) → Mandara Huts (2,720m) · Through the rainforest
- Walking: 4 hrs
- Distance: 8 km
- Elevation gain: +760m
After breakfast, an hour’s drive to Marangu Gate (1,960m) for park registration. The first day climbs through dense montane rainforest — vines, hanging mosses, the occasional Blue Monkey leaping through the canopy. The path is well-graded compared to other routes, one of Marangu’s quiet advantages.
You reach Mandara Huts (2,720m) by early afternoon. A short walk after lunch to the nearby Maundi Crater rewards you with views back toward Moshi and your first proper sense of the elevation gained. Hot meal in the dining hut, early sleep.

Day 3 — Mandara Huts (2,720m) → Horombo Huts (3,780m) · Above the treeline
- Walking: 6 hrs
- Distance: 12 km
- Elevation gain: +1,060m
Out of the rainforest into the heath and moorland zone. The trees give way to giant heather and the strange, prehistoric Senecio plants. The views begin to open in every direction — Mawenzi peak ahead, the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo visible for the first time, the plains of Tanzania far below.
Longer day today. Take it slowly — pole pole, as the guides say. Arrive at Horombo Huts by late afternoon. This is the camp you will return to tomorrow for acclimatization, then again on descent — Horombo becomes a familiar place.

Day 4 — Acclimatization day at Horombo Huts (3,780m) · The day that makes the difference
- Walking: 3–4 hrs (acclimatization hike)
- Max altitude reached: ~4,300m
This is the day that separates the 8-day Marangu from the standard versions. A short morning hike up toward Mawenzi Crater to roughly 4,300m, then back down to Horombo for lunch and rest. The classic “climb high, sleep low” principle that builds the red blood cells you’ll need at the summit.
The afternoon is yours. Read, write postcards, walk slowly around camp, drink water, sleep if you can. Your body is doing important work whether you feel it or not.

Day 5 — Horombo Huts (3,780m) → Kibo Huts (4,700m) · The alpine desert
- Walking: 6 hrs
- Distance: 9 km
- Elevation gain: +920m
After breakfast, the trail climbs into the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo — a stark, beautiful alpine desert with almost no vegetation. The landscape changes completely. You are above almost everything that grows.
The path is gradual but the altitude is real now. Expect headaches, reduced appetite, and shortness of breath. All of this is normal at 4,000m+. Arrive at Kibo Huts by mid-afternoon. Early dinner. You will sleep by 7pm and wake at 11:30pm for the summit attempt. Do not expect to sleep well.

Day 6 — SUMMIT DAY · Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → descent to Horombo Huts (3,780m)
- Walking: 10–12 hrs
- Distance: ~21 km
- Max altitude: 5,895m
The day you came for. Wake at 11:30pm. Hot tea and biscuits at midnight. Begin the climb to Gilman’s Point in the dark and cold — five to six hours of switchbacks up steep volcanic scree. This is the hardest part of the climb, physically and mentally. Trust your guide, drink water, keep moving.
From Gilman’s Point (5,685m), another two hours along the crater rim brings you to Uhuru Peak — 5,895m, the highest point on the African continent. Photographs at the famous sign. Then the long descent — back to Kibo Huts for a short rest and breakfast, then continuing all the way down to Horombo Huts at 3,780m. Long day. Every step downhill is a step into warmer, easier air.

Day 7 — Horombo Huts (3,780m) → Mandara Huts (2,720m) → Marangu Gate (1,960m) · Descent and certificates
- Walking: 5–7 hrs
- Distance: 20 km
- Then 1-hour drive to Moshi
Final descent through the heath, the rainforest, and back to the gate where you started. The air thickens with every step. By the time you reach Marangu Gate, your appetite, your breathing, and your sense of humour have all returned.
Summit certificate ceremony at the gate — gold for Uhuru Peak summiteers, green for Gilman’s Point. Transfer back to Moshi for the hot shower you have been imagining for days, and a celebratory dinner.
