Lake Manyara is compact but varied. Much of its area is the shallow soda lake itself; the rest spans groundwater forest, open grassland, and the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment rising behind it.
It is famous for tree-climbing lions, an unusual behaviour seen in only a few places in Africa. The lake draws flocks of flamingos and pelicans, and the forest near the entrance is alive with baboons, monkeys, and birdlife.
Because it is compact and right on the main circuit road, Lake Manyara is the perfect half-day to set up or wind down a bigger safari
What you'll see and do at Lake Manyara.
An unusual sight — lions resting in the branches of acacia trees, seen in only a handful of places in Africa.
Large flocks gathering on the soda lake, at their best in the wetter months when water levels rise
A lush entrance forest full of baboons, blue monkeys, and birds, fed by springs at the base of the escarpment.
An elevated treetop walkway and night drives are available in parts of the park for a different perspective.
A half- or full-day drive through forest, grassland, and lakeshore beneath the Rift Valley wall.
Resident hippo pools and the Maji Moto hot springs at the southern end of the park.
There is no bad time to visit — but each month has trade-offs. An honest seasonal breakdown by wildlife, weather, crowds, and price.
