About the Destination

Big elephant country, often overlooked.

Tarangire is often skipped on a first trip, which is exactly why it rewards those who include it. Covering roughly 2,850 km², it is defined by the Tarangire River and the giant baobab trees that dot the landscape.

In the dry season the river becomes a lifeline, drawing animals from the surrounding land. Elephant herds here are among the largest in Tanzania, and dry-season concentrations can rival the bigger-name parks.

Visit in the dry season and Tarangire can out-perform parks ten times its fame. Visit in the green season and it is quiet, scenic, and yours almost alone.

It sits within easy reach of the Northern Circuit, making it a natural first or last stop on a longer trip, and a calmer counterpoint to the busier parks.
