About the Destination

A different rhythm of safari.

Nyerere National Park sits in southern Tanzania and forms part of one of the largest protected ecosystems on the continent. It was established in 2019 from the northern part of the former Selous Game Reserve, a name many travellers still recognise.
What sets the south apart is how you experience it. Alongside game drives, Nyerere offers boat safaris on the Rufiji River and guided walking safaris, both of which bring you closer to the landscape than a vehicle alone.

If you have done a classic Northern Circuit before — or simply want fewer vehicles and water-based safaris — the south is the answer.

It is wilder and far less crowded than the Northern Circuit, and pairs naturally with a beach finish on Zanzibar or Mafia.

Practical Information

Getting There & Planning Your Visit

How to Get There

A short flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to a park airstrip is the usual route. Driving from Dar is possible but long.

How Long to Stay

Two to four nights to enjoy game drives, boat safaris, and walking. The variety of activities rewards a longer stay than a single drive-only park.

What to Combine With

Ruaha for a complete southern circuit, or the coast (Zanzibar, Mafia) for a safari-and-beach trip from the same side of the country.

Visa, Cash & Health

Visa: Tanzania e-Visa or visa-on-arrival (about $50 USD for most nationalities). Cash: USD accepted in camps; small notes for tips. Health: malaria prophylaxis recommended; yellow fever certificate if arriving from a yellow-fever country.

Common Questions

What Visitors Ask

Nyerere National Park was carved from the northern part of the former Selous Game Reserve in 2019. The names refer to the same broad region, so both are worth knowing.

Fewer crowds, plus boat and walking safaris that are not generally available in the northern parks.

June to October is best. The dry season concentrates wildlife near the river and improves access.

Yes. A short flight links the south to Zanzibar and Mafia Island, making a safari-and-beach trip straightforward.

It can be, especially if water-based safaris appeal. Many first-timers still start with the Northern Circuit, then add the south on a return trip.

Lion are common, and the park is one of the better places for wild dog. Leopard are present but harder to spot.

For most travellers they are a highlight, offering close, calm views of hippos, crocs, and birdlife from the water.

Yes, the riverine south is a malaria area. Take prophylaxis as advised, use repellent, and sleep under nets.
