About This Trip
Two days, two of Africa's most famous parks — without leaving your beach holiday for long.
Most travelers who fly to Zanzibar quickly realize they want to do at least one safari while they're in Tanzania — but they don't want to lose half their beach days getting to and from the northern parks. This 2-day trip solves that. You fly from Zanzibar to Arusha early on Day 1, do focused game drives in Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater over two days, and fly back to the island on Day 2 evening. Your Zanzibar hotel holds your luggage. Your tan continues unbroken.
The two parks chosen are deliberate. Tarangire has the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania (often 100+ animals visible at the river in dry season) and the famous ancient baobab trees. Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained ecosystem of roughly 25,000 large animals — including the best chance in Africa of seeing critically endangered black rhino. Two parks, two distinct experiences, two days. Not a substitute for a longer safari — but the right amount for travelers whose primary trip is the beach.
This trip is best for couples and small groups already booked on Zanzibar who want to add a meaningful wildlife experience. Travelers without a Zanzibar booking are usually better off with a longer northern circuit safari starting in Arusha.
"Two days isn't enough to do justice to northern Tanzania. But if you're going to add a short safari to a beach holiday, this is the best two-day combination available."

The 2-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Zanzibar → Arusha → Tarangire National Park
- Flight: ~1 hour Zanzibar to Arusha
- Drive: ~2.5 hours
- Afternoon game drive
Early morning transfer from your Zanzibar hotel to the island’s airport for the one-hour flight to Arusha. On arrival, your private safari guide meets you with chilled drinks and the 2.5-hour scenic drive south to Tarangire National Park.
Tarangire is famous for two specific things: the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania (often 100+ animals visible at the Tarangire River, especially in dry season), and the ancient baobab trees scattered across the landscape. The park’s ecosystem also supports lions, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, and over 550 bird species — Tarangire is one of the best birding parks in Tanzania.
Full afternoon game drive in the park, with picnic lunch in a shaded area near the river. Late afternoon drive out to your Karatu lodge for dinner and rest. The early start makes this a long day — most travelers sleep deeply.
Meals
Lunch (picnic in the park), dinner at lodge
Accommodation
Acacia Farm Lodge or similar (mid-range, Karatu)
Today's highlight
First elephant herd at the Tarangire River — often within the first hour
Day 2 — Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha → Zanzibar
- Early start
- Half-day in the crater
- Afternoon flight back to Zanzibar
Early breakfast and the short drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. The descent into the crater is dramatic — 600 meters of switchbacks down the crater wall into what is essentially a self-contained ecosystem. Inside the 260 square kilometer crater floor live roughly 25,000 large animals, including approximately 50 critically endangered black rhinos.
This is the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa, all visible in a single morning’s game drive. Lions (resident prides), elephants, buffalo, hippos in the central lake, flamingos at Lake Magadi, and — with luck — black rhino. Picnic lunch inside the crater near the hippo pool. Ascend the crater wall in the early afternoon for the drive back to Arusha Airport. Late afternoon flight back to Zanzibar. Your beach hotel meets you at Zanzibar Airport on arrival.
Meals
Breakfast at lodge, picnic lunch in the crater
